El verano de 2024 ha sido un poco menos ajetreado y entre recibir a artista y artista en residencia aquí en Castelo Studio, también he conseguido escaparme a conocer Studio Ardilla, el estudio de verano de Clara Holt en Génova. Durante dos semanas tuve el placer de compartir tiempo con Clara en su taller cerámico en el barrio de Nervi, un espectacular balcón sobre el mediterráneo en el que refugiarse durante las horas más calurosas del día viendo como los barcos se deslizan sobre el horizonte. Descubrir Studio Ardilla me permitió conocer de cerca su proceso creativo a la vez que yo experimentaba con pequeños formatos cerámicos.

The summer of 2024 has been somewhat less hectic, and in between hosting artists in residence here at Castelo Studio, I also managed to visit Studio Ardilla, Clara Holt's summer studio in Genoa. For two weeks, I had the pleasure of spending time with Clara in her ceramic studio located in the Nervi neighborhood, a stunning vantage point that overlooks the Mediterranean, providing a refuge during the hottest hours of the day while watching boats glide across the horizon. Discovering Studio Ardilla gave me a closer look at her creative process as I experimented with small ceramic formats.
Clara y yo nos conocimos durante su estancia como artista en residencia aquí en Castelo Studio el verano de 2023, ese mes de julio pude descubrir su increíble capacidad creadora y compartir largas charlas en el patio sobre su práctica y sus aventuras artísticas. Acercarte a las piezas de Clara y las historias que esconden es como revelar los misterios de mitos y leyendas de las que ella misma podría ser la protagonista. Ha adoptado la técnica del sgraffiatto como sello personal y lo ha llevado a su máxima expresión por medio de intrincados diseños infinitos en los que siempre te quedará algo por descubrir o un misterio por desvelar.

Clara and I met during her stay as Artist in Residence here at Castelo Studio in the summer of 2023. That July I was able to discover her incredible creative capacity and share long conversations in the patio about her practice and artistic adventures. Approaching Clara's pieces and the stories they hide is like unraveling the secrets of myths and legends in which she herself could be the protagonist. She has adopted the sgraffito technique as her personal signature and has taken it to its maximum expression through intricate, infinite designs in which there is always something to discover or a mystery to unravel.
Disfrutar de una residencia en Studio Ardilla fue un regalo del destino y un placer para los sentidos. Desayunar focaccia mirando al mar, cruzar en vespa el barrio de Nervi para ir a nadar a Capolungo, pasar las horas más calurosas del día en el estudio y terminar el día con un baño y una pizza en la playa de Bogliasco o Camogli o Sori, o cualquiera de los rincones escondidos que guarda Golfo Paradiso, de esos que te dejan prendida a primera vista y te hacen comprender por qué el antiguo Mar Mediterráneo ha sido cuna de civilizaciones durante milenios.

Enjoying a residency at Studio Ardilla was a gift of destiny and a pleasure for the senses. Having focaccia for breakfast overlooking the sea, crossing the Nervi district by scooter to go swimming in Capolungo, spending the hottest hours of the day in the studio, and ending the day with a swim and a pizza on the beach of Bogliasco or Camogli or Sori, or any of the hidden spots of Golfo Paradiso, those that leave you hooked at first sight and make you understand why the ancient Mediterranean Sea has been the cradle of civilizations for millennia.
